Present Lumbini Eye Institute (LEI), is a developed form of Shree Rana Ambika Shah Eye Hospital (SRASEH) established in 1983 within the premises of Government District Hospital (Bhim Hospital) in Bhairahawa with four staff along with highly dedicated Founder Director Dr. S. P. Dhital. With the generous land donated by Mr. Rana Bahadur Shah, and Siddharthanagar Municipality and financial support of Seva Foundation USA and Seva Canada Society, Canada, SRASEH constructed its building in 1993 named "Shree Rana Ambika Shah Eye Hospital". It has evolved into "Lumbini Eye Institute" since 2004 with affiliation to National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) for MD Ophthalmology Programme, and affiliating with Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) for Ophthalmic Assistant training.
